Is sustainable fashion a process, or I can shop it all sustainable?
Its interesting how sustainable brands stands next to fast fashion brands in the market these days, the prices; sustainable designs seems more expensive unlike other fast fashion brands, well all brands now claims "Sustainable fashion Brand "
Sustainability ain't a thing you can afford before now, it's a Culture we learn from homes, from elementary schools, subjects like home economics, topics and practicals like stitches and knittings to bead making and paper matches. I didn't want to thrash my pair of denim, I need to upcycle it to a skirt, add the remaining materials to the sleeves of my favorite denim jacket, the one I've outgrown, I could vividly remember how I kept the longest relationships with my clothes as a child, how I would cut and distress them to make something better, basically because I've out grown them, and my aunt will always discipline me for "spoiling your clothes" she will say
I understand how beautiful it is being part of the Slow fashion movement thing, shopping from sustainable fashion brands, but sustainable designs are now extremely expensive which I totally support, because the artisans (factory workers) needs to be paid well for their labour, the consumption in fashion needs to reduce, repeating a particular outfit needs to be normalized, this is one of the reasons why I tweeted earlier this week on Twitter "Basically fashion is a classist industry" the popular Culture of most influencers "I can't repeat this dress, I wore it earlier for some occasion" the labour of low paid factory workers on that dress is being taken for granted, the dress gets abandoned in the wardrobe till it's no longer in style and you have to thrash it .
I want to discuss other means of ethical fashion, without shopping all expensive sustainable pieces, I mean saving for the future and reducing consumption is also a sustainability development.
- Thrift stores; shopping from the second hand clothing store is equally ethical and sustainable.
- Upcycling your favorite fast fashion to Slow fashion
- Donating to sustainable brands
- Reduce high consumption - shop as low as possible, don't buy what you won't wear for a long time
- Read more, always be conceived of these questions
1. Who made my clothes?
2. Was any animal hurt during the production of my clothes?
3. What is in my clothes?
